Guano entered English through Spanish guano, which was borrowed from Quechua wanu, meaning dung or fertilizer. The term became internationally important through the extensive deposits of seabird excrement found along the Peruvian coast and on nearby islands. During the nineteenth century, this nutrient-rich material was traded widely as agricultural fertilizer. The chemical name guanine is historically related because that substance was first isolated from guano.
