特定の人や物を不公平にひいきすること。偏った好みや偏愛。
Partiality is an unfair preference for one person, group, or side over others. It is often used when talking about bias in decisions, treatment, or opinions. The word can suggest favoritism rather than neutral judgment.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
partial を知っていれば覚えやすい語です。まず part「一部・片側」→ partial「全体を公平に見ず、片側に寄る」→ partiality「その片寄り・ひいき」という流れで押さえると定着します。impartial が「公平な」なので、その反対だと考えるのも有効です。show partiality to ...「…をえこひいきする」でよく使われ、prejudice が先入観寄りなのに対し、partiality は実際に特定側をひいきする態度を表しやすい点に注意。

partiality は partial「一部分の・片寄った」+ -ity（性質）から成り、partial は古フランス語を経てラテン語 pars/part-「部分」にさかのぼります。もともと「一方の側に分かれる」感覚があり、そこから「公平でなく特定側に肩入れすること」。関連語は part, impartial。
