ヒンドゥー哲学やインド思想で、世界や心の働きを成り立たせる根本的な三つの性質を指す語。一般にサットヴァ、ラジャス、タマスの三徳をいい、人の気質や行動、宇宙の状態を説明する枠組みとして用いられる。
In Hindu philosophy, a guna is one of the basic qualities or forces that shape nature, behavior, and the mind. The three gunas are usually understood as balance and clarity, activity and desire, and darkness or heaviness. This is a technical religious and philosophical term.

guna はサンスクリット guṇa に由来し、原義は「ひも・より糸」から転じて「物を成り立たせる性質・属性」を表します。世界を織る糸のようなものと考えると意味が見え、関連語に triguna、nirguna があります。
