覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
halal はアラビア語由来で、イスラム法上「許されている」という判断を表します。halal food、halal meat、halal certification の組み合わせで覚えましょう。単に健康的・菜食という意味ではなく、食品なら原料だけでなく処理や調理法も関係します。反対語は「禁じられた」を表す haram です。
Link halal with the idea “permitted under Islamic law,” not merely “healthy” or “free from pork.” Use familiar combinations such as halal food, halal meat, and halal certification. For food, the label can concern ingredients, slaughter, handling, and preparation, so context matters. The clearest contrast is haram, meaning prohibited. Also avoid treating halal as identical to kosher: both concern religiously permitted food, but they belong to different legal and religious traditions and follow different requirements. This permission-versus-prohibition contrast is the most reliable memory anchor.

halal の語源・成り立ち Etymology
halal はアラビア語 ḥalāl「許された・合法の」に由来し、語根 ḥ-l-l は「縛りを解く、禁を外す」を表します。『禁じられていないもの』という発想から、イスラム法で許容される食品や行為の意味になり、同根に halla「解く」があります。
Halal is borrowed from Arabic ḥalāl, meaning “permitted, lawful, or legitimate.” It belongs to an Arabic root associated with untying, releasing, or making something allowable. Within Islamic legal and religious usage, it came to designate what is permitted rather than forbidden. English first used it mainly in discussions of Muslim dietary practice, but its application now also includes conduct, commerce, finance, cosmetics, and other products or services.
