解説 Definition

Memory Tip

Think of a `harbour` as a place where ships stay inside, hidden and safe. `Harbouring` is the same image for feelings or secrets: you keep them inside instead of showing them. Common pairs like `harbouring resentment`, `harbouring doubts`, and `harbouring a secret` make it easy to remember.

Etymology

Harbouring comes from harbour + -ing. Harbour goes back to Old English herebeorg, meaning a shelter or lodging, built from here "army" and beorgan "to protect." Over time, the idea moved from giving shelter to also keeping or hiding something inside, which is the sense still felt in harbour and related words like harbor and harbinger.
