harmattan は西アフリカのアカン語系 Twi の haramata に由来するとされ、さらに先のアラビア語起源は説があるものの不確かです。スペイン語 harmatán も同系で、土地の風名がそのまま英語に入った語なので、「サハラから吹く乾いた季節風」という地域感が語形に残っています。
