Heraldry is the system and study of coats of arms, family symbols, and traditional signs used especially in Europe. It is often discussed in history, noble families, and medieval culture, and it can also refer to the artistic rules for designing these symbols.

heraldry は herald「使者・紋章官」に -ry が付いた語で、herald は古フランス語 heraut を経てゲルマン系の hari「軍」+ wald「支配する」にさかのぼるとされます。Harold も近縁で、もとは紋章を扱う役人の仕事名だったことから紋章学の意味になりました。
Heraldry comes from herald with the suffix -ry, which forms nouns about a practice or field. Herald entered English through Old French heraut and is thought to go back to Germanic roots meaning "army" and "rule," also seen in the name Harold. Because heralds were officials who announced nobles and managed coats of arms, the word shifted from their work to the study and system of armorial signs.
