海藻や一部の水生生物が岩や海底にしっかり付着するためにもつ根のような器官を指す語。植物の本来の根とは役割が異なり、主に体を固定する働きをする。転じて、物をしっかり固定する留め具や支えを表すこともある。
A holdfast is a part of seaweed or a similar organism that attaches it firmly to a rock or another surface. It works like an anchor, not like a true root, so the word is mainly used in biology and marine science.

hold + fast に分けると覚えやすい。hold は「つかんで保つ」、fast は breakfast の fast ではなく「しっかり固定された」の意味で、fasten や steadfast と同じ仲間。つまり holdfast は「強くつかんで離さないもの」。海藻の holdfast は植物の root のように水分や養分を吸う主役ではなく、岩に体を固定するアンカー役。転じて留め具の意味にもなるので、「吸収する根」より「固定する器具」というイメージで押さえるとぶれにくい。
