免疫系の構造と機能、および免疫応答のメカニズムを研究する生物学の分野。疾病への抵抗力と感染症対抗の仕組みを扱う学問。
Immunology is the scientific study of the immune system and how the body protects itself from disease. It is mainly used in biology and medicine.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
immune（免疫の、病気に強い）を知っていれば、immunology は「immune を扱う学問」と取れる。-logy は biology, psychology, geology と同じで「〜学」なので、語尾だけでも学問名だと判断しやすい。immunity は「免疫という性質・状態」、immunization は「免疫をつけること・予防接種」で別語。大学の Department of Immunology、study immunology の形も一緒に覚えると、医学・生物系の文脈で自然に結びつく。
Start from `immune`, then notice `-logy`, the ending used in subjects like `biology` and `psychology`. That makes `immunology` easy to store as the field that studies immunity. Keep it separate from `immunity` and `immunization`, which are related but not names of a subject.

immunology は immune の語幹に -logy「学問」が付いた語で、immune はラテン語 immunis「義務や負担を免れた」に由来します。in-「不」と munus「務め・負担」から成り、そこから「病気の負担を受けにくい状態」を研究する学問、つまり免疫学になりました。関連語は immune, immunity。
Immunology comes from immune plus the suffix -logy, meaning "study of." Immune comes from Latin immunis, meaning "free from duty or burden," built from in- "not" and munus "service, duty, burden." The meaning later shifted to being protected from disease, so immunology became the study of that protection; immunity is a related word.
