An immunologist is a scientist or doctor who studies the immune system, which protects the body from disease. This word is mainly used in medicine and biology, especially when talking about allergies, infections, vaccines, or immune disorders.

immune はラテン語 immunis「義務や負担を免れた」に由来し、immuno- に -logist（ギリシャ語 logos「学問」由来）が付いてできた語です。immunity や immunology が同系で、もとは「負担を免れる」感覚が、病気を受けつけないという意味へ広がりました。だから immunologist は「免れている状態を研究する人」です。
Immunologist is built from immuno- and -logist. Immune comes from Latin immunis, meaning "exempt from duty or burden," and later this idea shifted into being protected from disease; -logist comes from Greek logos, meaning "study." So an immunologist is, in origin, a person who studies states of protection or exemption, and related words include immunity and immunology.
