体調が悪い
解説 Definition
体調がすぐれない、気分が悪いさまを表す少し遠回しな言い方です。sick より控えめ・丁寧に、具合が悪くて出席や対応ができない場合などに使われます。
If someone is indisposed, they are slightly ill or not feeling well enough to do something. It is a polite or formal word, often used instead of saying directly that someone is sick.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
disposed は「整った状態の」という感覚で見るとよく、そこに in- が付いた indisposed は「調子が整っていない」と考えると覚えやすいです。主に He is indisposed today. のように、体調不良をやわらかく述べる語として押さえます。「気が進まない」の意味もありますが、この語義では体の調子が悪い方向を中心に覚えるとぶれません。
Think of `disposed` as being in a ready or willing state; then `in-` makes it the opposite. So `indisposed` suggests someone is not in good condition or not feeling able. It is also a softer, more polite word than `sick`, especially in sentences like `He is indisposed today`.

ラテン語由来で、in-「〜でない」+ disposed から成る語です。dispose は dis-「離して」+ ponere「置く」で「整えて配置する」ことなので、indisposed は「整っていない」から「気分や体調がすぐれない」へ進みました。関連語は disposition です。
Indisposed comes from in- "not" and disposed. Dispose goes back to Latin disponere, from dis- "apart" and ponere "to place," and it first meant to arrange or set in order. From the idea of not being properly arranged or settled, indisposed came to mean not feeling well in body or mind.
