If you are unwell, you feel ill or not healthy. It is a polite and slightly formal word often used for minor sickness, tiredness, or a general bad physical condition.

well を「元気・調子がよい」と知っていれば、unwell はそのまま「well ではない」状態。not well に近い感覚で覚えると定着しやすいです。sick や ill よりも、病名を強く言うというより「今日は少し具合が悪い」「気分がすぐれない」という言い方で使われやすい語です。I feel unwell. / She is unwell today. の形で丸ごと覚えると、会話でも読みでもすぐ反応できます。「病気」より「コンディション不良」に寄る語、と整理すると混同しにくいです。

unwell は接頭辞 un-「〜でない」と、古英語由来の well「健康な・具合がよい」から成る英語本来の語。wellness や welfare と同じ well を持ち、よい状態から外れていると考えると「体調が悪い」がそのまま見えてくる。
Unwell combines un- with well, an old English word meaning healthy or in good condition. It shares the same root idea as wellness and welfare. The word simply developed from the sense of "not in a good state," especially for health.
