infantile はラテン語 infans「まだ話せない子」に由来し、in-「否定」+ fari「話す」が核です。infant や infancy も同根で、もとは単に「言葉を話せないほど幼い」が出発点だったため、そこから「幼児的な」へ伸びた流れがよく分かります。
"Infantile" comes from Latin infans, meaning a child too young to speak. That Latin word is built from in- "not" and fari "to speak." From the idea of someone at the earliest stage of life, the word developed into the sense of being childlike or immature; "infant" and "infancy" share the same root.
