中世ラテン語 influentalis にさかのぼり、語幹は in-「中へ」＋ fluere「流れる」です。関連語に influence、fluid があり、もとは星から流れ込む力を指したため、今の「人や物に作用する力」へ自然につながります。
Influential comes from influence, with the adjective ending -ial, and ultimately goes back to Medieval Latin influentalis. The base idea comes from Latin in- "into" and fluere "to flow."
