統計的に有意でない
adjective 形容詞統計で、観察された差や関連が偶然の範囲を超えたとは判断できないことを表す。statistically insignificantやan insignificant resultの形で使い、単に差が小さいという日常的評価とは区別される。
重要でない、つまらない状態を示します。ほぼ無視できるほど小さい価値や意味しかないことを表現します。
Insignificant means too small, weak, or unimportant to matter much. It can describe an amount, detail, result, or person’s influence. It is often used when comparing something to a larger or more important thing.
significant を「重要な・意味のある」と知っていれば、先頭に否定の in- が付いた insignificant はそのまま「重要でない」と取れる。まず significant difference(重要な違い)と insignificant difference(大した違いではない)を対で覚えると定着しやすい。人・数字・変化のどれにも使え、an insignificant amount なら「無視できるほど少ない量」。似た small は単に小さいだけで、insignificant は「重要性が低い」という評価まで含む。
Build it from "significant" with the negative prefix "in-." That makes it easy to remember as "not important enough to matter much." Learn it in contrast: a "significant difference" versus an "insignificant difference."
The difference between the two products is insignificant.
2つの製品の違いは取るに足らないものです。
He only chose the project color, so his contribution was insignificant.
彼はプロジェクトの色を選んだだけなので、貢献は取るに足らないものでした。
The cost increase is insignificant compared to the benefits.
`Insignificant` is made from `in-` "not" and `significant`. `Significant` comes from Latin `significare`, literally "to make known by a sign," from `signum` "mark, sign" and `facere` "to make." So the word originally suggests "not showing meaning or importance," and it came to mean something too small or unimportant to matter much.
