immaterialはin-「否定」+ materialから成り、materialはラテン語materia「木材・材料・中身」にさかのぼる。matterやmaterialも同根で、話の中身に関わるのがmaterialなら、immaterialは「本筋の材料ではない」ゆえに「重要ではない」と分かる。
Immaterial combines the negative prefix im- with material. Material comes from Latin materia, meaning "wood," "substance," or "matter," and it is related to matter itself.
