picayuneは米南部で使われたルイジアナ・フランス語picaillon「小銭・安い硬貨」に由来し、さらに南仏オック語系にさかのぼるとされます。もとが価値の低い硬貨だったため、『小さすぎて取るに足らない』からつまらない・安っぽいの意味になりました。関連語はpicaillon、picayunishです。
Picayune came from Louisiana French picaillon, meaning a small coin of low value, probably from an Occitan source in southern France. Because the coin was worth very little, the word came to suggest something petty, trivial, or cheap. The related form picayunish developed later in English.
