ingratiate はラテン語 gratia「好意・恩恵」に、in-「中へ」が付いた発想で、もとは「相手の好意の中に入り込む」こと。grateful や gratitude も同じ grat- を持つので、「取り入る」が単なる媚びでなく好意圏に滑り込む動きだと見えてくる。
