To try to make someone like you in order to gain approval, favor, or advantage. It is often used in the phrase "ingratiate oneself with," and it usually has a slightly negative meaning.

grateful / gratitude の grat- を知っていれば、「相手に好意を持ってもらう側へ自分を入り込ませる」という図で覚えやすい。よく ingratiate oneself with 人 の形で出て、「自分を相手に取り入らせる」という言い方になる。flatter が“お世辞を言う”に寄りやすいのに対し、ingratiate は態度全体で機嫌を取り、信頼や便宜を得ようとする感じ。自然な friendship ではなく、少し計算高い親しさだと押さえると定着しやすい。

ingratiate はラテン語 gratia「好意・恩恵」に、in-「中へ」が付いた発想で、もとは「相手の好意の中に入り込む」こと。grateful や gratitude も同じ grat- を持つので、「取り入る」が単なる媚びでなく好意圏に滑り込む動きだと見えてくる。
Ingratiate comes from Late Latin in gratiam, based on gratia, meaning "favor," "kindness," or "grace." The original idea was to get oneself into another person's favor. It is related to grateful and gratitude, which keep the same sense of goodwill and approval.
