insolvencyはin-「否定」+ solvency「支払い能力」で、語根はラテン語solvere「ほどく・支払う」です。debtを「ほどいて清算する」感覚が元にあり、solveやsolventと同根だと分かると、insolvencyが「支払いを解けない状態」つまり破産に通じる語だと分かります。
