ironingはiron「アイロンをかける」＋-ingでできた名詞で、元のironは古英語iren/isern、さらにゲルマン祖語*isarnamに由来します。おそらくケルト系の「強い金属」という語ともつながり、金属名から「その器具でしわをのばす行為」になったと見ると意味がつかみやすいです。関連語はflatironです。
