English Iscariot comes through Latin and Greek forms of the epithet attached to Judas. A traditional and widely discussed explanation derives it from a Semitic expression meaning “man of Kerioth,” identifying him by a place of origin. Other proposals, including a connection with Latin sicarius, “dagger-man” or assassin, remain disputed. The precise origin is therefore not completely certain.
