jumperは衣服名としては17世紀のjump「短い上着」から出た語で、さらに古フランス語jupe「上着、スカート」にさかのぼる説が有力。関連語にjupeやjumpsuitがあり、動きやすい短い上着という発想から「ジャンパー」を表すようになった。
