noun

セーター

解説 Definition

セーター、毛糸などでできた上着という意味です。日本語の「セーター」とほぼ同じで、寒い日に着る服を指します。

A sweater is a warm knitted garment worn over the upper body, usually with long sleeves. It is commonly worn over a shirt or other light clothing in cool weather.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

sweater は sweat「汗をかく」+「〜するもの」を表す -er からできた語です。現在は「汗をかくための服」ではなく、上半身に着る編み物の防寒着を指します。wear a warm sweater、a red sweater、put on a sweater のまとまりで覚え、sweatshirt は一般に編み物ではない厚手の運動着なので区別しましょう。

Connect sweater with sweat plus the noun-forming suffix -er. Historically, the name referred to a garment associated with producing sweat during exercise, although today it simply means a warm knitted garment for the upper body. Picture putting on a warm sweater on a cold day, and learn common combinations such as a red sweater, wear a sweater, and put on a sweater. Keep it separate from sweatshirt: a sweater is typically knitted from wool, cotton, or synthetic yarn, while a sweatshirt is usually made from thick jersey fabric and has a more athletic or casual origin.

例文

This sweater is warm.

このセーターは暖かいです。

She wears a red sweater.

彼女は赤いセーターを着ています。

I need a sweater today.

今日はセーターが必要です。

sweater の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 swǣtan(汗をかく)から派生した sweat + 接尾辞 -er。元は運動時に汗をかくために着る厚手の衣服を指した。「汗をかかせるもの」が原義。関連語: sweat, sweatshirt

Sweater was formed in English from sweat and the suffix -er. Sweat is inherited from Old English swāt, the noun, and swǣtan, the verb “to perspire.” In the nineteenth century, sweater was applied to thick clothing worn during exercise to encourage perspiration or keep the body warm. Its meaning later broadened and settled on the familiar knitted upper-body garment. The historical formation explains the spelling, though modern speakers do not usually associate an everyday sweater directly with sweating.
