クリミア戦争（1854年）で軽騎兵旅団の突撃を指揮した第7代カーディガン伯爵 James Brudenell に由来。防寒用に前開きの毛編み上着を着用したことから命名。地名カーディガンはウェールズ語 Ceredigion（ケレディギオンの地）に遡る。
Cardigan was named after James Brudenell, the seventh Earl of Cardigan, a British cavalry commander associated with the Crimean War. The title Cardigan comes from the Welsh place-name Cardigan, connected with Welsh Ceredigion. During the nineteenth century, the title became attached to a knitted military-style jacket and then developed into the general clothing term for a front-opening knitted sweater.
