kaleはスコットランド語 kail を経て、古英語 cawel、さらにラテン語 caulis「キャベツの茎」にさかのぼります。細かな接辞分解はしにくいですが、葉物野菜を指す古い語がそのまま残った形です。cauliflower や cole（coleslaw の cole）と同根だと知ると、同じアブラナ科のつながりが見えます。
