カンガルーはオーストラリアを代表する有袋類の動物で、後ろ脚が非常に発達しており、跳躍して移動することで知られています。雌は腹部の育児嚢（ポーチ）の中で子供を育てる特徴を持ちます。
A kangaroo is a large Australian marsupial with powerful hind legs, a long strong tail, and a pouch in which the female carries and nurses her young. It moves mainly by hopping, and its baby is called a joey.

kangaroo は日本語の「カンガルー」と同じ動物名で、オーストラリア先住民の言語から英語へ入ったため、英語の接頭辞・語根には分解しない。powerful hind legs、jump、pouch、baby kangaroo＝joey を一組にする。複数形は規則的に kangaroos で、wallaby は一般により小型の近縁動物。
The Japanese word カンガルー already identifies the animal, so strengthen the memory with four features: Australia, powerful hind legs, hopping, and a mother’s pouch. Add the useful fact that a young kangaroo is called a joey, and remember the regular plural kangaroos. The word was borrowed from an Indigenous Australian language, so do not try to divide it into English prefixes or roots. Contrast it with wallaby: both are related hopping marsupials, but wallaby is generally used for smaller species. Typical phrases include a mob of kangaroos and a kangaroo carrying a joey in its pouch.

kangaroo の語源・成り立ち Etymology
kangaroo は1770年ごろ、英語がオーストラリア先住民グーグ・イミディル語 gangurru を取り入れた語です。外来の分解はしにくいですが、土地固有の動物名がそのまま英語化した例で、「その地の名を借りた語」と考えると腑に落ちます。関連語に wallaby、koala があります。
Kangaroo entered English around 1770 during James Cook’s expedition to eastern Australia. It was borrowed from gangurru in Guugu Yimithirr, an Indigenous Australian language, where the word referred to a particular kind of large kangaroo. English speakers later broadened it into the general name familiar today. The popular story that the word meant “I do not understand” is false. Wallaby and koala are separate borrowings from other Indigenous Australian languages.
