Wallaby was borrowed into English from an Aboriginal Australian language of the Sydney region, commonly identified with Dharug forms such as walabi or waliba. English settlers adopted the local animal name around the beginning of the nineteenth century. The word has no meaningful internal division in English. It later became part of compounds such as rock-wallaby and brush-wallaby, which distinguish animals by habitat or conventional zoological grouping.
