A kiosk is a small, separate structure used for selling goods or providing information, or a freestanding electronic terminal that lets users perform a service themselves. Kiosks are common in stations, airports, shopping centers, and public spaces.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
日本語では駅売店の印象が強い一方、英語の kiosk は小さな売店だけでなく、空港の搭乗券発行端末や受付のセルフサービス機にも使います。buy snacks at a kiosk と print a pass at a kiosk の二場面を対にし、「小型で独立した販売・案内拠点」と覚えると用法が広がります。
Remember two typical kiosk scenes. In the first, a small stand near a station sells water, snacks, and magazines. In the second, a freestanding airport screen prints boarding passes. English kiosk covers both the small sales structure and the self-service electronic terminal, so its range is broader than the Japanese image of a railway shop alone. Useful combinations include information kiosk, ticket kiosk, and self-service kiosk. Unlike a vending machine, an electronic kiosk may handle several interactive steps rather than simply dispensing one product.

I bought a bottle of water at the kiosk.

kiosk の語源・成り立ち Etymology
Kiosk entered English through French kiosque and Italian chiosco, from Turkish köşk, ultimately related to Persian kūshk, referring to a palace, pavilion, or open garden structure. The word first denoted a small ornamental pavilion. Its meaning later narrowed or shifted toward small public booths and sales stands, then expanded again to include freestanding electronic terminals offering information or self-service functions.
