pavilionは中英語・古フランス語を経てラテン語papilio「蝶」にさかのぼる語です。papillonと同根で、広げた天幕が蝶の羽に見えたことから、もとは豪華なテント、そこから展示館や休憩所の「パビリオン」になりました。
Pavilion came through Old French from Latin papilio, meaning "butterfly." The link seems to be that an open tent with its cloth spread out looked like butterfly wings. So the word first referred to a tent, then later to light buildings used for display, rest, or events; French papillon shares the same root.
