pillion はケルト系のスコットランド・ゲール語 pillean／アイルランド語 pillin「小さな敷物・座布団」から来て、さらにラテン語 pellis「皮」にさかのぼります。関連語に pelt, pellicle があり、もとは鞍の後ろに置く皮張りの小座布団だったので、今の「後部座席」の意味につながります。
