decoy はオランダ語 eendenkooi「アヒル捕獲用のおり」が縮まって英語化した語です。もとは鳥を囲いへ誘う仕掛けで、そこから相手をわざと誘い出す「おとり」の意味へ広がりました。関連語に duck decoy、decoyman があります。
Decoy comes from Dutch eendenkooi, literally meaning a duck cage or trap. It first referred to a device used to lure ducks into an enclosure. From that physical trap, the meaning widened to any person or thing used to attract and mislead.
