The element’s name was formed from Greek kryptos, meaning “hidden.” William Ramsay and Morris Travers identified krypton in 1898 while examining the residue left after liquid air had largely evaporated. The name reflects how the rare gas had remained concealed among other atmospheric gases and was difficult to isolate. Cryptic and crypt share a related Greek root, although their modern meanings developed along different paths.
