lading は古英語 hladan「積む・載せる」から出た lade に -ing が付いた語で、原義は「積まれたもの」です。load や overload と同じ語根なので、船に載せた貨物がそのまま「船荷」になったと分かると意味がするっと入ります。
This word comes from lade with the suffix -ing, and lade goes back to Old English hladan, meaning "to load" or "put on." It is closely related to load and overload. The basic idea was "what has been loaded," which later became the usual sense of cargo or freight, especially on a ship.
