ラテン語lamentatio（嘆き）が語源で、動詞lamentari「嘆く」に名詞化の-ationが付いた形です。lamentやlamentableも同根で、悲しみを心にしまうのでなく声にして表す感じがlamentationに残っています。
Lamentation comes from Latin lamentatio, from the verb lamentari, meaning "to mourn" or "to wail." It entered English through the same family as lament and lamentable. Over time, it kept the strong sense of expressing sorrow aloud rather than keeping grief silent.
