learn は古英語 leornian（学ぶ・知識を得る）に由来し、ゲルマン祖語で「跡をたどる」が原義とされる。道筋を追って知識を得るイメージ。同根語に lore（伝承・知識）がある。about は古英語 onbūtan（周りに）が語源で、対象の周囲を探索するように学ぶ意。
