駐在大使館よりも格下の外交機関。または、そうした機関に派遣された外交官のグループを指す。
A legation is an official office that represents one country in another country. It is an older diplomatic term, usually used for a mission led by a minister rather than an ambassador, so today it is less common than embassy.

legation は delegation を短くしたように見て覚えると残りやすい語です。delegate「代表を派遣する」を知っていれば、leg- に『任務を帯びて送られる』感覚があり、そこから外交使節団やその拠点へつながります。意味は embassy と近いですが、embassy が大使館、legation はそれより格下の公使館という歴史的な区分。古い外交史・条約・制度説明で出やすい語です。つづりは legislation と少し似るので、法律ではなく外交施設の語だと切り分けて覚えると混同しにくくなります。
Think of `legation` as looking like a shorter form of `delegation`. If you know `delegate`, it is easier to connect the word with people sent on an official mission, and then with the place they work from. Be careful not to mix it with `legislation`: that is about law, while `legation` belongs to old diplomatic language.
