A lemma is the main form of a word that is listed as a dictionary entry. In language study, different forms of a word are often grouped under one lemma. This is a technical term used in linguistics and lexicography.

ギリシャ語 lēmma「受け取ったもの・取られたもの」が語源で、動詞 lambanein「取る」から出た語です。数学では「補題」になりますが、辞書・言語学では、さまざまな語形をまとめるために“取り出された代表形”という感覚で「見出し語」につながります。関連語に dilemma があります。
Lemma comes from Greek lemma, meaning "something taken" or "an assumption," from lambanein, "to take." In logic and mathematics, it came to mean a statement accepted and used to help prove something larger. The sense is still close to the original idea of something taken up for use.
