不適合者とは、グループや社会に合わない人、または環境に適応できない人を意味します。周囲の規範や価値観に従わない個人を表し、時にはポジティブな文脈でも使われます。
A misfit is a person who does not seem to belong well in a particular group, place, or situation. The word is often used for someone whose behavior, ideas, or personality are very different from those around them. It can sound negative, but it may also suggest individuality.

fit は「合う・似合う・適する」。そこに mis- が付くので、misfit はまず「うまく合わないもの」と分解して覚えるとよいです。人については「変な人」より、「集団・職場・学校などの枠にしっくりはまらない人」という感覚が中心。fit in（なじむ）の逆向きだと考えると残りやすいです。outsider が単に外側の人を指せるのに対し、misfit は中にいても相性が悪く浮く感じ。a social misfit のように使われ、時に反骨的で個性的な人を前向きに言うこともあります。
