古英語 liste（縁、帯）からゲルマン祖語に遡り、布の縁に名前を書き連ねたことから「一覧表」の意味に発展。list の過去分詞形。関連語に enlist（入隊する＝リストに名を連ねる）、listing（一覧）。「表に載せられた」が原義。
