古英語 fox、ゲルマン祖語 *fuhsaz に遡る。印欧語根 *puḱ-（尾がふさふさした）に由来するとされ、毛深い尾が特徴として名付けられた。ドイツ語 Fuchs も同根。狡猾さの象徴として foxy（ずる賢い）という派生語も生まれた。
Fox comes from Old English fox and goes back to Proto-Germanic *fuhsaz. It may come from an Indo-European root linked to a bushy tail. So the animal may have been named for one of its most visible features. It is related to German Fuchs, and later English formed foxy from it.
