ラマとは、ラクダ科に属する南米原産の動物で、ラクダに似た特徴を持ちます。毛並みが良く、積荷を運ぶために飼育されてきた家畜です。
A llama is a South American animal with a long neck and thick wool, related to the camel. It is often kept for carrying loads, for wool, or as a farm animal.

llama はスペイン語 llama を経て、南米アンデスの先住民語ケチュア語 llama に由来します。接頭辞や接尾辞で分ける語ではなく、土地固有の動物名をそのまま借りた語なので、『ラマ』という実物を直接指す意味になりました。英語で同根の派生語は少なく、llama wool などの複合表現で使われます。
Llama came into English through Spanish llama, which was borrowed from Quechua, an Indigenous language of the Andes. It is not built from smaller parts in English but was taken over as the local name of the animal. Because of that, its meaning stayed close to the original borrowed word. English uses it in compounds such as llama wool.
