English alpaca was borrowed in the eighteenth century from Spanish alpaca. The Spanish word came from Aymara allpaqa, the name of this domesticated Andean camelid. The animal has been raised in the Andes for thousands of years, chiefly for its fleece. The word later developed a related material sense, referring to the fiber itself and to cloth made from it.
