古英語「loppestre」に由来し、ラテン語「locusta（バッタ・エビ）」が変化したもの。海底を跳ねる姿がバッタに似ていたことから同じ語が転用された。locust（バッタ）と意外にも同根で、陸と海の「跳ねる生き物」がつながる。
