岩石の割れ目や地層の中に、金属鉱物などが帯状・脈状に集中して存在する鉱床、特に鉱脈を指す語。採掘価値のある鉱物の集まりについて用いられ、鉱山開発や地質調査の文脈でよく使われる。比喩的に、価値あるものの豊かな源を表すこともある。
A lode is a natural deposit of metal or mineral in rock. It is mainly used in mining and geology when talking about valuable materials found underground. In figurative use, it can also mean a rich source of something.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
load（荷物）とつづりが近いので混同しやすいですが、lode は地中にまとまって走る「価値ある鉱物の筋」と覚えると残ります。単なる石の集まりではなく、採掘できそうな帯状の鉱物の集積を指す語です。vein も「鉱脈」に使えますが、lode は鉱山・地質調査でやや専門的。mother lode で「最大の鉱脈・宝の山」の感覚も一緒に押さえると定着しやすいです。

lode は古英語 lād「道・進路」に由来し、もとは鉱石が地中を走る「筋・通り道」を指しました。そこから鉱脈の意味になり、鉱石が一本の道のように続くと考えると覚えやすい語です。関連語は load, lead。
