A logbook is a book or record where someone writes down important events, activities, or information over time. It is commonly used on ships, planes, at work sites, or in scientific work to keep an official record. Today, it can also refer to a digital record, not only a paper book.

logbook は log＋book の複合語。log はもと船速を測るため海に流した木片、book は古英語 boc「書物」で、 ship's log や blog と同根だから、単なる日誌でなく「航海の記録帳」という出自が見える。
Logbook is a compound of log and book. In sailing, a log was originally a piece of wood thrown into the water to help measure a ship's speed, and the results were written in a book. From that shipboard record, the word later came to mean any regular record book; related words include ship's log and blog.
