Etymology
Mastiff entered English through Anglo-French forms such as mastif and Old French mastin, terms for a large watchdog. The deeper history is uncertain, though the word is generally regarded as belonging to a Vulgar Latin line of development. Its early association with dogs used to protect homes, estates, and livestock explains why it still evokes great size, strength, and guarding ability.
