感情や反応、表現のしかたが必要以上に誇張されていて、芝居がかって見える様子を表す。人の態度や話し方、映画や文章の演出などについて、わざとらしいほど劇的だと感じるときに使われる。

melodramatic はフランス語 melodrame に由来し、ギリシャ語 melos「歌」+ drama「行為・劇」に由来する要素が重なった語です。melody や dramatic と同じ核をもち、もとは「音楽つきの芝居」だったため、感情を大げさに揺さぶる感じへ広がったと見えてきます。
Melodramatic comes from melodrama, borrowed from French melodrame. Its parts go back to Greek melos "song" and drama "action, play," the same roots behind melody and dramatic. It originally referred to drama with music, and from there it came to suggest exaggerated emotional effect.
