解説 Definition
mesh は、網目状の素材や構造を指す「メッシュ」という意味です。日本語の「メッシュ」と同じく布やネット状のものに使いますが、英語では部品や仕組みがかみ合う構造を指すこともあります。
A material or structure made from threads, wires, or similar strands arranged with regular spaces between them. Mesh allows substances such as air or water to pass through while blocking larger objects.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
日本語の「メッシュ」と同じく、細い糸や線が交差してできる網目状の素材を思い浮かべます。mesh bag、fine mesh screen、made of mesh が典型表現です。net は網そのものや網状製品を広く指しますが、mesh は素材・構造や一つ一つの網目に注目する語です。空気が通る細かな網を記憶の中心にします。
Connect mesh with the visible pattern of crossing threads or wires and the small open spaces between them. Picture a mesh bag, a fine mesh screen on a window, or breathable mesh fabric: air can pass through, but larger objects are held back. The common phrase made of mesh identifies the material itself. Net is broader and often names a complete object used for catching or enclosing something, whereas mesh emphasizes the openwork material, structure, or size of its openings. This physical image also explains the verb sense in which parts mesh by fitting together closely, although the target entry is the noun.

mesh の語源・成り立ち Etymology
mesh は中英語 mesche、さらに古英語 masc「網」へさかのぼり、印欧祖語 *mezg-「編む・より合わせる」と結びつく。だから「網目」の意味から、歯車や仕組みがぴたりとかみ合うことまで表すようになった。関連語は enmesh, intermesh。
Mesh comes from Middle English mesche and is related to older Germanic words for a net or one of its openings. Its deeper history is associated with the idea of joining or weaving strands together. The noun first referred to the openings and structure of a net and later broadened to openwork materials made from wire, thread, or fabric. From the image of interlocking strands, English also developed the verb meaning “fit or work together closely.”
