minutiaeはラテン語minutiae「ごく細かなこと」の複数形で、語幹はminuere「小さくする」。minuteやdiminishも同根で、何かを削って縮めた先に残るのが「細部」だとわかる。些末な点を指すのは、意味の芯に「小さくする」があるから。
