計算や見積もりの誤り。数値を計算する際に犯される間違いや、予測が実際と異なることを表す名詞です。
覚え方のコツ
まず核は calculation。calculate / calculator と同じ仲間で「計算・見積もり」のことだと押さえると、先頭に mis- が付いて「誤った計算」だと自然に取れます。misread, misunderstand の mis- と同じで、「悪く」ではなく「間違って」の感覚。単なる mistake より、数字・予測・判断の見積もりが外れた場面でよく使います。a serious miscalculation, a political miscalculation のように、数式以外の“読み違い”にも広がる語だと覚えると残りやすいです。
