A miscalculation is a mistake in judging numbers, facts, or a situation. It can refer to an actual math error or to a wrong decision based on poor judgment. The word is common in business, politics, and everyday problem-solving.

まず核は calculation。calculate / calculator と同じ仲間で「計算・見積もり」のことだと押さえると、先頭に mis- が付いて「誤った計算」だと自然に取れます。misread, misunderstand の mis- と同じで、「悪く」ではなく「間違って」の感覚。単なる mistake より、数字・予測・判断の見積もりが外れた場面でよく使います。a serious miscalculation, a political miscalculation のように、数式以外の“読み違い”にも広がる語だと覚えると残りやすいです。
Build it from `calculation`, then add `mis-`, the same prefix as in `misread` or `misunderstand`. `Mis-` often means wrong, so `miscalculation` is a wrong calculation or wrong judgment. Remember that it is often used for bad estimates, not just math: `a serious miscalculation`.

miscalculation は mis-「誤って」+ calculation。calculation はラテン語 calculare「小石で数える」にさかのぼり、calculate や calculator も同根です。『数える操作が外れる』と捉えると、計算違いの意味がすっと入ります。
Miscalculation is made from mis-, meaning "wrongly," and calculation. Calculation goes back to Latin calculare, literally "to count with small stones," from calculus meaning "pebble." The word therefore developed from the idea of counting wrongly; related English words include calculate and calculator.
